4Love it for my Home DVD's creation  Nov 22, 2009
As I always suggest, there is a trial version, take advantage of it. I was hesitant to upgrade from Nero 7 because of all the bad reviews. Had no problem installing trial, after three days decided to buy it, uninstalled the trial and installed the full version, it was a breeze to do it.

What I like:

Nero Vision very similar as the one on Nero 7 so there is not much of a learning curve. This is very important to me because I create family DVD's to share with my relatives overseas. I capture to the HDD through Nerovision, afterwards edit it, make DVD menus and finally burn it.
Nero Burning Rom easy to use, fast burning, I burned a CD in under 3 minutes 690/700 MB, although hardware has a lot to do with it too.
Nero Smart help you choose the proper program for the task you want to accomplish.
It also has programs like Wave Editor or Soundtrax for advance users and sometimes you can use it to shorten songs for video clips.

What I don't like:

Nero Showtime, Windows Media Center or Media player work better and more fluid.
Cover Designer, prefer the HP Lightscribe Label Creator
No more InCD, although you can use multiple session disc with Nero Burning Rom.

4I like this program. It does the things that I want.  Nov 19, 2009
I'm not too sure why people don't like this program. I don't do video with it (I don't do video at all), so maybe that's it. I use it for CD burning, including lightscribe. It works fine for that. I also like that I can make an mp3 from a wave file with it, without having to burn it to a disc and then rip it to mp3, which is what I used to have to do. I am teaching musician, and recently made a cd of drum patterns for my students to practice to. On listening to my master cd, I noticed that the last 4 tracks on the cd were noticeably quieter than the rest of the tracks. No biggie, my students could just turn up the volume when they got to those tracks, but I wanted a cd that I didn't have to apologize for in any way. I was able to right click on the tracks>properties>EQ> and then just raise the volume on those tracks and only those tracks. Problem solved. I also used a preset EQ curve ("Light Bass Lift") to tone down some of the tracks where the kick drum was a little too earth-shaking.
On the negative side, the CD labeling software is infuriating in its difficulty to use. I can still use it, but the quality of my presentation suffers because it's so hard to get it to do what I want it to do. I've used an earlier incarnation of Nero before, and this was true then as well. They do really need to get that together.
But I'm happy with the burning software. I don't know about Roxio myself--I used it maybe six or so years ago and it seemed fine except for it wouldn't convert file formats (wav to mp3 or vise versa) without burning a disc as I described earlier, which really worked my last nerve, and then it messed with my operating system so bad I had to cough up $175 for Geek Squad to come to my house and fix my registry. The guy said he recommended ditching Roxio for this reason and I did. I have a feeling that wouldn't happen these days, and I don't know if they have the file conversion feature or not, but I got Nero b/c it has the stuff I find useful, and maybe I'll get around to making a CD insert template in Word so I don't have to deal with their label making program again.

1difficult to install, and a disaster upon installation, no return policy  Nov 14, 2009
I would agree with the other reviewers. This software is a disaster, and should be shut down. It is unweildy, takes forever to install, and has many glitches upon installation that cause your computer to shut down. Worst of all, they will not refund the purchase price unless you run the gauntlet of their technical support. Forget that. Beware, do not purchase unless you get a money back guarantee on demand.

2Do they test these things?  Nov 13, 2009
Nero 9 installed in roughly 2 hours onto my quad-core, 64 bit, Windows 7 system. No problems other than the length of time it took. Then, on the website I saw that an updated version was available, I downloaded it, began the install and proceeded to get install errors. I canceled out and did an uninstall. The system was left a mess. Looking around I found that Nero had a cleanup too to remove all traces from a bad install. Gee, I wonder why they have that tool?

Eventually, after a few more failed attempts, and way too much time spent, I realized that I could use the Nero 9 Update by itself with the product key that came with my disk.

That install was reasonably quick and I now have a good working version of Nero 9.

So, getting back to the title of this epistle: Do they test these thing?

1AWFUL!!!!!  Nov 12, 2009
Nero is one of the worst companies I have ever had the misfortune of trying to do business with. I've been a Nero user for many years and thought upgrading to Nero 9 would be a good idea. WRONG! Not only does Showtime crash almost every time I open a video file, their Web site is so un-user-friendly. Will be using Roxio and other options from now on!
